Civil Rights for All

Father Hesburgh served on the United States Civil Rights Commission from 1957 until 1972, and served as chairman from 1969–1972. Although his work on the commission is the centerpiece of his civil rights legacy, his dedication to the cause was a lifelong commitment. Father Hesburgh reflected in his autobiography, “My devotion to and efforts on behalf of civil rights and human rights have continued unabated through the years.”
