Civil Rights for All

Father Hesburgh served on the United States Civil Rights Commission from 1957 until 1972, and served as chairman from 1969-1972. Although his work on the commission is the centerpiece of his civil rights legacy, his dedication to the cause was a lifelong commitment. Father Hesburgh reflected in his autobiography, "My devotion to and efforts on behalf of civil rights and human rights have continued unabated through the years."
